MEET CLOVER

FIRST OFFICIAL WLWH SANCTUARY MUSTANG

There’s this beautiful place in southwestern Utah, nestled in the Mountain Home Range. Deb and I were there from August 14th – August 19th, 2020, scouting for Wild Lands Wild Horses docuseries and to witness firsthand what it is like for a wild horse to be captured with a helicopter. This place is called Sulphur Herd Management Area (HMA) and it even has its own designation in the Utah Gazetteer on plates 64 and 72.

Jump to April 14th, exactly one year and eight months later, Jamie was sitting across from Clare at Skydog Sanctuary, when Clare received a message with a post about a mustang mare named Clover who was in dire straits along with a Shetland pony. Clare was debating what to do, but was worried about the long haul from Florida to Oregon and the toll it might take on little Miss Clover. Sitting there, I (Jamie) asked to see her picture. My eyes immediately welled up with tears and without hesitation said she can come to New Jersey (NJ), to give her a chance for a successful recovery without the stressful haul across America.

As more information revealed itself, Clover was born in 2019 on the Sulphur HMA, and was gathered with eighteen other horses on August 16th, 2020. Clover was then put up for adoption in 2021, and was adopted and her journey then took her to southern Florida.

Here, her story goes haywire and pieces are still missing, because Clover and a Shetland pony were found roaming in southern Florida, emaciated, with no one caring for them. After someone reported seeing them, the South Florida SPCA Horse Rescue (Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), after walking miles through fields and muck, were able to capture Clover and the Shetland pony, and begin providing the medical attention and nutrition they need.

Clover will be the first official sanctuary resident for Wild Lands Wild Horses Fund in collaboration with Clare from Skydog Sanctuary! Clare’s experience, help, encouragement and guidance is paramount in bringing our first official sanctuary resident to NJ.

Clover has been thriving in NJ with her own herd to call family. In fact her little petite self is the lead mare over 2 TBs, 1 draft, and a 16 hand mustang.

TRNP ADVOCACY

We've produced numerous Call-to-Action (CTA) videos and advertisements to champion the cause of the wild horses of TRNP. The outcome has been extraordinary, with thousands of comments on the Environmental Assessment (EA), over 100,000 views, and an incredible level of engagement.

SINATRA

Destined for long-term holding and at risk of being forgotten among countless other captured wild horses, Sinatra of Twin Peaks lost his freedom. Through a stroke of luck or perhaps sheer persistence, we managed to rescue him when the BLM allowed us to pull him at a rest stop in Nebraska. Countless emails, calls, texts, and posts ensued, and it was the combined efforts of Jessica Jordaan, myself, and others that ultimately secured the breakthrough we had been fervently praying for.

We successfully raised funds for Sinatra's journey to freedom, and he now lives wild and free at Skydog Sanctuary, where he will live out the rest of his days.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Linda Hay, whose alert brought Sinatra's plight to our attention. It was her vigilance that initiated the process when a cowboy corralled him and bred his mares to him, prompting the BLM to pick him up. Abigail Curtis, an exceptional TIP trainer near Litchfield, also played a crucial role by diligently searching for him at the corrals, despite initially not finding him. Eventually, she uncovered the heartbreaking truth that Sinatra had been brought in undernourished and, sadly, too late to prevent his slated long-term holding in secrecy, away from public awareness.

YUMA

Yuma the mustang is a very special horse indeed. We pulled him from the Twist of Fate Neglect Case and brought him to a rehab to recover. At the rehab he started to colic and went to the hospital to have emergency surgery this is $12k. He will be coming to Sage Hill to recover and will stay here until we decide what the best next step is for him. Would you consider donating to his surgery? https://gofund.me/a39485d2

SURGERY FOR SUZIE

Suzie started her life in BLM holding facility and she languished there, in a dirty pen with no human interaction for YEARS. She was unwanted because her swooping sway back meant she couldn’t be ridden, so she was left behind at adoption events again and again.

She was finally freed from holding and adopted by a sanctuary. But the human who was supposed to care for and protect her, betrayed her and became her abuser.

This past July, rescuers found Suzie starved half to death when they entered the property where she was kept.

We later discovered that, in addition to being severely emaciated and malnourished, she has some awful damage to her jaw.

She needed THREE surgeries to remove teeth that are cutting into her tongue, creating lesions and sores – making every bite she takes excruciatingly painful.

Despite ALL of the abuse she’s suffered, Suzie is still so sweet – she wants nothing more than to love her human and be loved in return.

Suzie is now in a loving forever home.

NJ SEVERE NEGLECT CASE

In collaboration with Rancho Relaxo, Goats of Anarchy, Riley’s Farm Rescue, Bluemont Sanctuary, Wild Lands Wild Horses helped place 100+ animals into forever homes and sanctuaries. This included Equines, pigs, sheep, goats, cows and more. This has by far been the hardest case we have ever dealt with. In addition to the above groups over 20 organizations have come to help.

WLWH has donated the following funds for:

  • Feed until the animals could get placed.

  • Clean up

  • Adoption for 2 bonded mustangs and two burros (This fee includes hauling, vet care, and feed).

  • Rescue & rehabilitation for three more mustangs on the property.

GENTLING/TRAINING FOR DARYL HANNAH

While we were visiting the holding pens in Ewing, IL we spotted Daryl. He was in a pen slated for long term holding, but something in me was telling me I needed to find him a home. When I saw his beautiful long golden locks I said to myself… he looks like Daryl Hannah from the movie Mermaids and he represents her activist ways. We reached out to several organizations/sanctuaries to see if they could adopt this special soul. Foreverland Farm stepped up and offered him a home. They immediately sent him to a trainer to be gentled, because he was wild. Unfortunately the trainer and Daryl did not mesh. So they sent him to a more compassionate, understanding one. WLWH donated one month of funds so this can happen!

WLWH_STAR.jpg

STAR THE MUSTANG

Our first distribution of funds went to Bluemont Sanctuary who found two young mustangs in a kill pen in Louisiana. The strawberry roan had tons of interest, but the little bay, Star had none. WLWH FUND offered to bail Star out so she can go with the other mustang to a sanctuary in Florida. We are honored to help provide their freedom ride.

DAWN THE MUSTANG

Jamie went to bear witness at a livestock auction with Rancho Relaxo. There, they spotted a mustang and her skinny friend in there and decided to bail them out. Minnie (skinny friend) was easily handled but the mustang was feral after being left in a field untouched her whole life.

We named her Dawn after the “dawn horse” an extinct but first known horse in North America where wild horses originated.

After being in quarantine for over a month we were told no one was able to touch her. Summer stepped up and said she would gentle her for us and ended up adopting her!

A SHELTER FOR TWIN ARROWS SANCTUARY

We are super happy that we were able to provide funding for a run in shelter and make a contribution towards fencing at Twin Arrows Sanctuary! Twin Arrows is dedicated to not only rehabilitating and rescuing but providing their mustangs & burros the training and tools they need to have a chance at the best life.

WINTER HAY BILL FOR ALL THE KINGS HORSES

Currently All The King’s Horses (ATKH), located on the east coast, is responsible for the care of seven once wild mustangs — four from California, one from Nevada, one from Arizona, and one from Oregon.

Feeding seven mustangs is a challenge even in the best of years, and with escalating hay prices, the financial responsibility has become more demanding. ATKH, makes every effort to take in mustangs most in need. In addition, ATKH provides wild horse educational opportunities, and make trips to the western range so they can provide firsthand knowledge of what life is like for a wild horse.

Thank you ATKH for being a reliable and safe place for mustangs to land on the east coast.
